• Approximately 1 in 10,000 children across Australia yearly is born with a limb defect.
• One common condition is called Amniotic Banding Syndrome. A thin string gets caught and wraps itself around the limb cutting off a blood supply causing the limb to amputate in the uterus or stop growing.
• Congenital Limb Deficiency is when the child is born with the missing or deformed limb.
• Actual limb deformities can be caused by something in the environment, the mother being ill with such things as German measles or a chromosomal defect.
